TOTAL LICENSING
CARTOON NETWORK LICENSE BAKUGAN
Following their recent US announcement, Cartoon Network Enterprises and Nelvana Enter-
prises have entered into a relationship to support their new animé property, Bakugan. Through
the agreement CNE will serve as the brand’s licensing agent for the non-toy related categories
across Europe and Africa.
Since its inception in 2006 the property, which is a co-production from Nelvana Enterprises, Spin
Master Ltd., Sega Toys Ltd and TMS Entertainment, Ltd., Japan Vistec Inc. and Sega Corporation,
with animation by Japan Vistec Inc. and TMS Entertainment, Ltd., has become a broadcast and
consumer products phenomenon in both Japan and Canada. With Spin Master as master toy
partner, CNE will work to create a comprehensive consumer products program by adding a
series of key categories.
The Bakugan television series will launch in the UK on Cartoon Network in 2008 and will subse-
quently roll out across the rest of the EMEA territories. A character-rich animated series aimed
at boys aged 6 to 11, it follows the adventures of Dan and his fellow Battle Brawlers as they use
strategy and skill to unleash their Bakugan power and save Vestroia and Earth from destruction.
Alan Fenwick, Vice President of Cartoon Network Enterprises for Europe, Middle East and Africa
said, “We believe Bakugan is a perfect complement to our strong stable of brands and is a very
exciting property to represent and build upon our presence in the boys consumer products
market.”
Doug Murphy, President of Nelvana Enterprises, added, “Nelvana Enterprises and our Bakugan
partners are thrilled to link up with the Cartoon Network Enterprises team as we position
Bakugan as the breakout boys action property of 2008.”
HIT FORM ALLIANCE WITH DUBAILAND
Dubailand, a member of Tatweer, recently announced it has formed a strategic al-
liance with UK-based HIT Entertainment, to develop a diverse portfolio of family
entertainment projects in Global Village at Dubailand.
A part of the alliance will be the creation of the HIT Entertainment ‘Little Big Club’
in Dubai. The project represents a multi-million AED investment within the perma-
nent Global Village, which is set to open its doors in the last quarter of 2008.
Mohammed Al Habbai, CEO of Dubailand, said, “The alliance with HIT Entertain-
ment is a continuation of our strategy of bringing the world’s most prestigious
names in the leisure and entertainment industries to Dubailand. Hit Entertainment
joins an illustrious portfolio of Tatweer-owned investments formed by Bawadi,
The Tiger Woods Dubai, Universal Studios Dubailand and Dreamworks Animation
Park, in addition to Dubailand itself and the Global Village.”
MARVISTA LAUNCH BJ’S TEDDY BEAR CLUB
MarVista Entertainment is offering range of new and returning kids programs at MIP TV this year. Brand new to the in-
ternational market is BJ’s Teddy Bear Club and Bible Stories, an imaginative program designed to educate, entertain and
introduce one to five year old children to colors, letters, numbers and the stories of the Bible. The star of the show is
BJ (Bearsheba J. Bear), a loveable animated teddy bear who brings the best-known and best-loved bible stories to life for
the whole family. BJ’s Teddy Bear Club won two Telly Awards: a Bronze Telly in the Religious/Spiritual television category
for its David and Goliath episode, and a Bronze Telly for Use of Music for the ‘BJ’ episode Noah and the Ark. A combina-
tion of animation and live-action programming, 13 half-hour episodes and a Christmas special are available now with 13
additional episodes currently in production.
Also new to MIP TV in HD is The Hidden Treasure of Wompkee Wood, the second CGI animated
one-hour feature about the magical Wompkees - elfin characters who, thanks to their giant ears,
can fly. The original feature aired in the US on Starz; has been released in more than 40 countries
worldwide; and in Latin America, DVD Distributor Tycoon sold more than 70,000 units. Red
Sky Entertainment is developing a US consumer products licensing program to coincide with
the debut of the new movie this Fall; and Mary Meyer, a specialty plush toy company, has cre-
ated plush toys and finger puppets modeled on the story’s characters. In Summer this year, a
new Wompkee virtual-world website will debut. The Wompkees are one of the longest running
continuous costume characters in the Macy’s Parade, and will appear once again in the event in
2008. Tycoon has recently signed an agreement with MarVista for the DVD rights to The Hidden
Treasure of Wompkee Wood in Mexico and the Caribbean.
