MIPCOM CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF 23RD SHOW
In spectacular Cote D’Azur weather, the 23
rd
MIPCOM registered its best ever attendance last Octo-
ber, attracting 13,371 participants which represents a 7% increase on 2006.
MIPCOM also set new records in
terms of exhibitors and countries
represented. 4585 companies from
105 countries took part – up 9%
from the previous year. In addition,
the number of exhibiting compa-
nies rose 10% to 1801 in October.
International buyers, too, attended
in greater numbers with 4242 ac-
quisition executives in Cannes for
the event.
Commenting on the growth, Paul
Johnson, Director of Television at
Reed Midem said, “Numerous fac-
tors contributed to making the 23
rd
edition break records, including the increased presence of compa-
nies in the technology, mobile and advertising sectors. With a special country focus during MIPCOM,
India has never had such a strong presence before at the market with a 392% increase in the number
of Indian exhibiting companies.”
Over four days, the MIPCOM conference programme comprised 30 sessions, more than 100 speakers
and seven keynote speeches from leading executives giving their insight into recent industry changes,
including Emilio Azcarraga of Grupo Televisa, Mike Volpi of Joost, Paula Wagner of United Artists and
Ben Silverman of NBC Entertainment and NBC Universal TV Studio.
To mark its MIPCOM special focus, India was honoured with a series of conferences and keynote
speeches from two leading figures of the country’s industry - Subhash Chandra, Founder & Chairman,
Zee Network & Essel Group of Companies, and Ronnie Screwvala, Founder & Chairman, UTV Group.
MIPCOM also participated in the launch of Pangea Day, in the presence of Jehane Noujaim, the Ameri-
can-Egyptian director of the documentary on Al-Jazeera “Control Room.” Pangea Day will bring to-
gether cultures through the broadcast of a programme of short films made by directors of different
nationalities on the same day - 10 May 2008. Broadcast will be around the world and across all plat-
forms including television, mobile and Internet.
As always, MIPCOM attracted a number of international celebrities to Cannes and this year these
included Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, British actor John Nettles and actor and musicial Max
Beesley.
Prior to MIPCOM, the specialist marketplace for children’s programming MIPCOM Junior brought
together 515 companies from 54 countries. During the two-day event, 918 programmes were available
for buyers to screen, including 484 brand new shows. The keynote address by Rich Ross, President of
Disney Channel Worldwide was among the highlights of the event.
Other key conferences during the two-day MIPCOM Junior included the Buyers’ Summit, which
brought together top programming executives from international broadcasters. In addition, the Digital
Kids! Panel looked at the latest opportunities in cross-platform kids’ entertainment and social com-
munities.
In all, MIPCOM Junior 2006 welcomed, 829 participants from 529 companies and from 52 countries.
A total of 937 programmes were presented of which 562 were new. MIPTV will take place in Cannes
between 7 and 11 April and the next MIPCOM will be on 13 to 17 October.
MAX & RUBY ENTER ‘08 WITH NEW BOOK SERIES
Nelvana Enterprises’ popular bunny siblings Max & Ruby are making a big leap into 2008 in a new
book series now available at Chapters/Indigo stores across Canada.
Canadian publisher Key Porter Books has released 10 new titles based on episodes of the animated
television series, including Max’s Favourite Things and Ruby’s Magic Act. Chapters/Indigo is now fea-
turing the books at its large-format stores, along with Ty Beanie Babies of the characters.
“We are excited that this book series is now available to the thousands of devoted Max & Ruby fans
across Canada,” said Mark Northwood, VP Merchandise Licensing, The Americas, Nelvana Enter-
prises. “It’ll also be fun for young readers to cuddle up with a Max or Ruby Beanie Baby, too.”
