of Ottawa shocked all onlookers by dropping and
throwing away their chance at a national title.
ULTIMATE VIDEOS
Mephisto, roaring back after subpar performances
early on, capitalized on their Ottawa opponent’s
miscues and advanced. General Strike suffered the
worst loss of all, a universe point elimination defeat
at the hands of Blackfish.
The round was finished off with local team Invictus
crushing Mangina 15-3. Four teams remained, and the
teams immediately moved on to semi-final action.
SEMI FINALS
Nomads and Blackfish faced off in the first semi-
final. Nomads flexed their collective muscle and won
in surprisingly romp over their opponents, 15-5.
Mephisto and Invictus proved to be a much more
even and contested semi. Much to the chagrin of
local fans, Invictus was unable to get past Montreal’s
finest. Eric St Amant, Mark Zimmeral, and Dan
Fassina managed to lead their team (which had
both ups and downs all season) to victory when it
mattered most. Now, they were one victory away
from a national title.
In the bronze medal game, Invictus defeated
Blackfish 11-8 to win bronze. Both teams wanted a
medal of a different color, but one was able to salvage
their tournament and take home hardware.
FINALS
Many fans and players remember the 2007 Open
final was a battle staged on field turf and featured
heavy rains. It is always hoped that the weather
will not be a factor in championship games, but
no outdoor sport can control the weather. The sun
was bright and present each and every day of CUC
2008, but the wind was very strong on day two and
on the Sunday of the Open championship. Mephisto
and Nomads would be challenged by the strong
wind, and would have to play strategically to
counter act it.
The game started with both teams trading points.
Viewers could see the punting the disc when playing
with the wind was a safe offence and also a good
defensive tactic. Mephisto went away from this
during the middle of the first half and allowed the
Nomads to score valuable break points. Building on
this, the Nomads broke away from Mephisto and
easily took the half.
Facing a veteran squad with world level talent, a
strong wind to overcome and a deficit, Mephisto
mounted a quick comeback in the second half and
were determined to make it an interesting game
until the very end. Despite their charge, the Nomads
managed the game and the lead. Finishing off the
game by a 17-11 score, Nomads of Victoria were once
again crowned national Open champions.
