long-standing maritime women’s pickup team wins first tournament
BY REBEKAH CHASSE
On Sunday Sept. 21st 2008 the Chrome Ladies won their first Clambake title, going undefeated in 6 games and allowing fewer than 10 points to be scored on them.
Chrome Ladies has been a long-standing tradition in New Brunswick Ultimate since its inception in 2000. The pickup squad gathers every year for Clambake (and in some years Montreal’s Jazz
Fest as well), with the goal of providing women from New Brunswick’s three major Ultimate towns – Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John, where co-ed Ultimate normally is the rule – a chance to
play together as a women’s squad and forge new alliances with pickups from outside NB (past out-of-NB pickups have included women from Wisconsin, Vancouver, Houston, Washington, Quebec
City, Colorado, and Halifax). The squad’s primary objective - every year and without exception - is to wreak major havoc at the Clambake Saturday night party by running a shooter bar that collects
donations for Maine Special Olympics (the sideshow spectacle of the Ladies themselves ingesting half of their stock is in itself the stuff of Clambake legend). In the past this commitment to the
“Spirit and Party First” ethos, while generous and ridiculously fun, has also had the anticipatory result of severely curtailing the team’s Sunday on-field performance. Not this year! The 17 ladies
who answered the call this year brought not only a healthy party appetite with them but also an average playing experience of 6 years, with several members of the squad having competed at the
CUPA Nationals, UPA Nationals, and Worlds’ level. Hence they were able to overcome Sunday morning’s early chat with the porcelain bowl to deliver a fierce performance on the field which saw
the squad dominate every game, including a hard-fought and spirited final against Boston’s Hatch. With the win comes fresh buzz that the Ladies will re-form in time for Montreal’s 2009 Jazz
Fest; there is even talk of getting “real team jerseys…from, like, a company or something” to go along with the new street cred. The Ladies wish to thank Alex Pozzy, TD, and the lads of Red Tide, for
organizing the best fall tournament in the East!
