one poached, shouting “Poach!” tells your offensive
teammates that they might find themselves open.
The Digital Ultimate Crossword
Finally, the call tells your defender that you’re on to
smart enough? We doubt it, but give’er a try!
her ploy. This may stop her in midpoach, which puts
the defense at a double disadvantage.
(actually, it’s pretty easy)
While yelling “Poach,” you should also immediately
find an open spot on the field, far away from your
poaching defender. This leaves you more open to
receive the pass and makes it more difficult for the
defense to recover from the poach. Many offenders
seem to feel the temptation to run toward the strong
side when poached. Most often, this means running
right at the player who poached off of you. Avoid this,
and run away from the poach.
If you’re poached onto, continue cutting.
Sometimes the poacher will abandon you after a
moment, and your own defender might hesitate,
leaving you briefly open. If the poach stays with you,
let the thrower know not to throw it to you, either
by shouting “No” or waving your hands. If possible,
point toward your free teammate.
Switching and poaching are high-level maneuvers
demanding an awareness of the field around you.
As your one-on-one defense improves, so does
your vision of the field, and these maneuvers allow
you to use your vision to help your team respond
to imminent threats and to receive help from your
teammates. Smart play requires that you don’t create
bigger threats in the process. Good communication
makes for smooth execution of switches and proper
recovery from poaches.
