Bandon. Here, visitors can experience medieval buildings and
streetscapes as they wander from one historic site to the next. Food-
lovers will find themselves spoiled for choice here, in the Gourmet
Capital of Ireland – a fact celebrated each October with a four-day
Gourmet Festival organised by the town’s Good Food Circle. Kinsale
also has plenty of fine pubs where visitors can enjoy delicious food,
live music or simply soak up the atmosphere. In keeping with its long
maritime tradition, Kinsale remains popular with yacht owners and
deep-sea anglers; it also offers a wide range of outdoor activities,
including golf, horse-riding, clay-pigeon shooting and walking tours.
Kinsale Regional Museum is housed in Kinsale’s 17th century Town
Hall. The museum features a wealth of relics from the town’s colourful
past, including Kinsale lace, a number of Royal Charters and a cannon
from the HMS St. Albans, which sank in the harbour in 1693. Another
maritime disaster, the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, 20km south
of Kinsale with the loss of 1,500 lives, is commemorated in the Great
Hall. The exhibition contains fascinating memorabilia, with the added
interest that at the time of the sinking, the museum served as the old
courthouse where the official inquiry into the disaster took place.
On Cork Street, Desmond Castle (the French Prison) has a colourful
history, ranging from Spanish occupation in 1601 to its use as a prison
for captured American sailors during the American War of Independence.
It now houses an International Wine Museum. Tel: (021) 477 4855. St.
