CONG
If parts of the attractive town of Cong seem familiar, it’s because this
is where John Ford’s classic The Quiet Man was filmed. The area
around Cong is dotted with caves, and it’s well worth visiting the
megalithic burial chamber of the Giant’s Grave about 3km to the west.
Elsewhere around town, the 12th century Augustinian Cong Abbey in
Abbey Street was built on the site of an earlier 6th century abbey. Its

carved doorway and decorated stone-work are fascinating. Here too is
Ashford Castle, formerly home to the Guinness family and now one of
the leading hotels of the world.

Established 1870
954 6820; Email: falconry@eircom.net; Web: www.falconry.ie. Falconry
is an ancient art, reputed to be the oldest sport in the world. Originating
in the Far East around 2000 BC, as a means of catching food for
yourself and your family, falconry spread westwards, reaching the shores
of Europe long before the end of the first millennium. Ireland's School
of Falconry offers you a rare opportunity to fly a hawk around the
spectacular grounds of Ashford Castle. Our aim is to share with you the
pleasure and excitement of falconry, a fascination that has enthralled
people for 4,000 years – come and see why. We specialise in teaching
falconry lessons using our beautiful Harris hawks, but in addition to
hawks the school is home to a variety of eagles, owls and falcons. This
exclusive collection of birds of prey is open by appointment only,
however, bookings can usually be accommodated at a moment's notice.
No previous experience is necessary; the school caters for all ages and
abilities. Flying a hawk is the experience of a lifetime!
