WEXFORD TOWN
Wexford Town is an attractive place with Viking and even earlier
origins dating back to the 2nd century. The entire county is one of
considerable beauty, splendid beaches and a rich historical heritage.
Its annual Wexford Festival Opera is a highlight in Ireland’s arts
programme as well as an event of international stature.
The Gothic-style Johnstown Castle, 7km south west of Wexford, is
the former home of the Fitzgerald and Esmonde families. The castle is
surrounded by 20 acres of well-maintained, wooded gardens and is
home to an agricultural research station, the headquarters of the
Environmental Protection Agency and the Irish Agricultural Museum
and Famine Exhibition. Tel: (053) 42888. North of the town is the
Wexford Wildfowl Reserve, internationally famous for the huge flocks
of wild geese that winter there. The Irish National Heritage Park at
Ferrycarrig is possibly Wexford’s showpiece visitor attraction, tracing the
journey through Celtic, early Christian, Viking and Norman periods of
Irish history. A great way to familiarise yourself with the town’s history
is by joining the Walking Tour of Historic Wexford. This hour-long stroll
through the town’s historical buildings covers Wexford’s history from
the time of the Normans and Celts to Cromwell’s invasion in 1798
and the present day. Tours depart from the Westgate Heritage Centre.
