ATHENRY
Twelve miles from Loughrea is Athenry, where the Dominican Priory,
founded in 1241, has many unusual features, including lancet
windows and tomb recesses, each with a tale to tell. Athenry Castle

THE ARAN ISLANDS
The Aran Islands were formed from the same limestone reef which gives
rise to the Burren in County Clare and both regions share the same
extraordinary landscape of grey slabs with a unique flora bursting from the
cracks in between. Inis Mór, the largest of the three islands, is home to
the impressive Iron Age fortress of Dún Aonghasa. Perched spectacularly
on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this is the largest of the
prehistoric stone forts of the Aran Islands. It is enclosed by three massive
