MR BEAN’S HOLIDAY IS A BOX OFFICE SUCCESS
Mr Bean, portrayed by Rowan Atkinson returned to the big screen in April with a new
movie - Mr Bean’s Holiday - which, as at 9 May, had already achieved a box office gross
of $167 million, excluding the USA, Japan and Korea where the movie will debut later
in the year.
The new movie is the culmination of a number of initiatives for Mr Bean which began in
2002 when Rowan Atkinson worked with animators to transform the character into an
animated series. This was broadcast to critical acclaim and was followed by Bean – The
Disaster Movie which saw Mr Bean causing mayhem in the international art world.
Created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard
Curtis, Mr Bean enjoys global popularity
with distribution of both the classic origi-
nal and animated television series in more
than 60 countries around the world and
Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie took
more than $255 million worldwide.
Katherine Senior, head of licensing for Tiger Aspect, who control Mr Bean,
reports growing interest in the property around the world.
“Asia is a key market for Mr Bean”, she explained. “Our Japanese agent, To-
hokushinsha, already has a number of deals signed and the program will, no
doubt grow when the film releases in November”.
The US program is also performing well through The Sharpe Company. Pen-
guin has signed to produce four movie tie-in books this July, ahead of US film
debut in August and Sharpe has also signed Pollard Banknote Inc for a series
of lottery scratch cards.
On a worldwide basis, deals have been signed for a Playstation 2 and Nin-
tendo DS game which will launch at the end of the year and, in the UK, Tiger
Aspect is working with publishers Bloomsbury for a retail exclusive to coin-
cide with the DVD launch this August.
