CHORION SIGNS BROADCASTER FOR OLIVIA
Chorion has signed a major deal with UK broadcaster Five for its brand new children’s television series
Olivia, based on the best-selling book property.
In addition, Chorion has signed a number of new international pre-sales with ABC Australia, YLE Finland,
SVT Sweden, NRK Norway and RUV Iceland for the pre-school animated series.
The UK deal further consolidates Chorion’s relationship with Five which already airs the producer’s kids
shows The Mr Men Show and Make Way For Noddy. Olivia will broadcast as part of Five’s Milkshake! block.
The 52 x 11 minute series for a pre-school audience is currently in production with delivery scheduled for
autumn 2008.
Based on the award-winning books written and illustrated by Ian Falconer, Olivia is a 3D CGI series animated
by the Academy award-nominated company Brown Bag Films. Chorion’s Diana Manson is executive producing
along with Pat Resnick who is also the head writer. Pat is an acclaimed screen and television writer with credits
including 9 to 5, Quintet, Maxie, Straight Talk and the Golden Globe-nominated Hell on Heels - The Battle of
Mary Kay.
Five’s Director of Children’s Programmes Nick Wilson says, “Olivia is a great character! And I am very fond
of her – she’s also 6 and three quarters which is one of the great ages! She’ll be Pig of the Year and a great
addition to Milkshake.”
Geraint Marsh, Senior Vice President, TV Sales at Chorion says: adds: “Our relationship with Five continues to
go from strength to strength and we are excited to be bringing Olivia to a UK audience as well as to children
worldwide. The books are already an established brand, making Olivia a classic Chorion project and we are con-
fident that her energy and imagination will appeal to a global audience.”
SUPER WHY! TELEVISION SERIES SOLD
Decode Enterprises returned from MIPTV with a host of sales signed for Out of the Blue Enterprises’ innovative, criti-
cally-acclaimed animated preschool show Super Why!, including a deal with Nick Jr in the UK. Decode holds worldwide
television rights to the series excluding the U.S.
“We were pleased to acquire Super Why! for Nick Jr,” said Debbie MacDonald, VP, Programming Director for Nick-
elodeon UK. “This interactive animated series delivers on our philosophy of inviting pre-
school viewers to have fun joining in with adventures, whilst also encouraging valuable
language skills.”
The series, which is already airing in the US on the PBS Kids preschool programming block
as well as Canada’s CBC, has also been sold to Singapore’s Kids Central, Korea’s KidsTalk-
Talk channel, ATV, EBS, Hana TV and Iconix Entertainment.
Super Why! is produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises, in conjunction with Decode
Entertainment. Out of the Blue is led by Co-Founders Angela Santomero, a Creator of
the preschool entertainment show Blue’s Clues, and former Nickelodeon entertainment
executive and children’s marketing expert, Samantha Freeman. In addition to its work on
Super Why!, the company created, wrote and produced the new ten-episode series Blue’s
Room, which launched in January 2007 on Nick Jr.
Super Why! is the only preschool property created to help young children learn literacy
skills through interactive storybook adventures. The program represents a unique approach to preschool educational
television, featuring the Super Readers, a team of superhero characters with literacy-based powers, who jump directly
into books to look for answers to everyday challenges. The home viewer is the superhero sidekick, who is encouraged
to participate in the fun through playing research-based reading games.
Neil Court, President of Decode said, “We’ve had a great response to Super Why! with its story-based adventures. It
can be a challenge to find preschool programming that is both educational and strongly balanced with entertainment,
but Super Why! hits the mark and we are pleased to have signed this important deal with Nick Jr for the standout
series.”
