A HARD DAY’S NIGHT JUST GOT EASIER
The Beatles brand is continuing to build its impressive growth and expand its reach with two new UK licensing awards.
Caroline Mickler, who is implementing the Beatles brand licensing strategy on behalf of Apple Corps, has announced the
award of licenses to Powerplay Textiles and Character World Limited to produce a range of Beatles-branded sleepwear
and bedding aimed at fans old and young. Powerplay Textiles will be offering five styles of Beatles
nightwear, three styles of underwear and three styles of socks. The first phase of rollout will target
the 18-35 year-old men’s market. The Powerplay Beatles nightwear range will be launched in stores
in September this year. Character World is planning a range of bedding that will include single and
double duvets, curtains, printed cushions, a towel and a fleece blanket. Two designs are planned for
the duvets, with matching accessories for both. The range, aimed at students and adults, will be
launched in August 2008 in the UK, Channel Islands and Eire, and will be availablevailable onon the the high high street eet
as well as online.
Caroline Mickler, whose licensing strategy for the brand has already attracted a number of high
profile brands including Lee Cooper, Ben Sherman, Kangol, Wedgwood, Halcyon Days and Corgi
International, says: “We are delighted to have Powerplay Textiles and Character World on board. Both companies produce
the sort of high-quality, stylish, attractive products that Apple Corps is looking for to take merchandise bearing the Beatles
brand both to long-term fans and to a whole new generation.”
KEITH HARING ANNIVERSARY
Munich-based agency Euro Lizenzen report that Artist Keith Haring, would have celebrated his 50th birthday in May this
year. Ahead of the anniversary, Euro Lizenzen, together with Artestar New York, have announced several new product
launches for 2008 in European markets, including an urban apparel line from Global Labels, metal drinking bottles from
Sigg of Switzerland and Giraudi of Monte Carlo who will
manufacture and distribute mobile phone and MP3 covers,
glass casses and watches.
Between 1980 and 1985, Haring produced hundreds of
public drawings throughout the New York City subway
system; sometimes creating as many as forty in one day.
Haring was able to attract a wide audience and assure the
accessibility and staying power of his imagery, which has
become a universally recognized visual language of the
20th century.
In 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS, and in 1989,
a year before his death he established the Keith Haring
Foundation to support not-for-profit organizations
involved in education, research and care related to AIDS,
as well as organizations that assist children.
MASTER TOY DEAL FOR PINKY AND PERKY
PPC Enterprises, the commercial division of the Picture Production Company Group, re-
cently announced that it has secured a master toy deal for Pinky & Perky, the new CGI
children’s comedy series.
The deal sees PPC Enterprises license pan-European rights to toy manufacturer Martin
Yaffe, who will produce a series of figurines, playsets and plush toys under its Born to Play
brand. The products are scheduled to be at retail from Spring 2009 following the launch of
the TV show on CBBC on BBC One this Fall.
“We’re pleased to have licensed Martin Yaffe these rights. They’re an established toy manu-
facturer who will create high quality, novel interactive toys which will reflect the show’s
liveliness,” said Mark Hurry, director of legal and commercial, PPC Enterprises. “Pinky &
Perky is a classic brand which has been revived and given a make over for the 21st century.
The new CGI series is sure to be a hit with both young and old and the quirky characters
in the show present us with many great licensing opportunities.”
Ronnie Yaffe, managing director of Martin Yaffe International, added “We’re delighted to have
picked up these rights from PPC Enterprises and to drive the Pinky & Perky master toy
program across Europe. This classic property has been updated with cutting-edge graphics
and an up-to-date sense of humour which is sure to create an enormous fan base.”
PPC Enterprises holds worldwide rights to Pinky & Perky and is next looking to extend the

brand into publishing, apparel, collectables and homewares.
