drew more than 100 entries from 22 schools
worldwide, including Australia, Canada, India,

prizes were awarded in each category, plus an
overall Grand Prize.
The Grand Prize was awarded to Zoe Nemetz,
Syracuse University, College of Visual and Per-
forming Arts - Surface Pattern Design, Syra-
cuse NY, for her personal stationery design Fly
Away. Nemetz’ project was inspired by “travel
and flight” and “the more personal connec-
tion” afforded by stationery. Her designs include
postcards, notecards, writing paper and enve-
lopes. Nemetz’ project won for its attention to
graphic detail, universal appeal, upscale quality
and outstanding presentation. Judges singled out
her work as a creative manipulation of a singular
motif, and a clean, understated contemporary
design with a vintage feel. Nemetz will receive a
$1,000 cash prize and a trip to the 2008 Surtex,
including round trip transportation and hotel
accommodations, plus a one week internship
within the design industry.
First place in Home Elements was won by Ka-
tarina Cordiale, Academy of Art University, San
Francisco, for Eau-de-Vie, which was influenced
