NEW LICENSES FOR 2007 FROM NEW WORLD TOYS
New World Toys, the toy division of Sambro International, are adding to their growing
number of licenses in 2007 with the addition of three of the trade’s most well
known properties.
Barney & Friends will be celebrating his 20
th
anniversary in 2008 and HIT
has signed Sambro International to expand its existing range of children’s
wooden furniture. It is hoped both parents and children will love the
colourful table and chair, toy chest, height chart and bookcase.
Another anniversary brings another license acquisition. The ever
popular Teletubbies are 10-years-old and to celebrate, New World
Toys have added the brand to their furniture range with a colourful
toy chest and table and chair set.
As Transformers makes a comeback in 2007 with a brand new movie, new Transformer
Pinball machines will be launched.
All three branded ranges will be further developed by New World Toys to appeal to a new genera-
tion of pre-school fans, inspiring role-play and improving development skills as well as being lots of
fun for toddlers.
ITC CONTINUE TO GROW IN THE BRAZILIAN MARKET
As one of the largest licensing companies in Brazil, ITC now have 22 years experience and employ 39 people work-
ing in the Brazilian market. The company now has more than 230 contracts and proposals signed and intend to sign a
further 30 this year, increasing their royalty value by 20%.
In 2006 ITC was named best International Agent for Paws, closing the year with 24 signed contracts of which 14 had
been signed in 2006. Garfield sales were stimulated by the release of the Garfield 2 movie, which contributed to the
i n - crease of the number of contracts and the expansion of licensing products in the Brazilian market.
Recently, ITC signed a contract with Sony to add the promotional rights to Spider-Man 3 to the merchan-
dising rights which ITC already handle. As a result, up until February this year, ITC had closed more than
45 deals for the Spider-Man 3 movie. Staying with Marvel and, in 2006 , excluding USA, the Brazilian
market, handled by ITC, was the largest growing market for Marvel character licensing.
Bratz, of course, have been hugely successful for ITC and, beginning this year, ITC are representing all
the MGA properties in Brazil including Zapf Creations, Storytime Princess, Little Tikes, Yummi Land,
Bratz Ponyz, Bratz Babyz and Bratz Kidz. ITC have already finalized some contracts and a Brazilian
Summit is planned for this year in order to launch the new properties into the marketplace.
In terms of other properties, ITC signed an agreement with Jetix last year to represent Sonic X
in Brazil and, since the end of 2006, the company has been representing Cop Corp’s properties
including It’s Happy Bunny and Barcode Kitties.
Finally, through ITC, Snoopy has new licensees that will launch two major product lines this year.
LP&M will publish five different pocket book titles and Buba Toys Company will launch a range of plush
dolls.
PUCCA PROVES TO BE A MERCHANDISING SUCCESS
Pucca, from South Korean animation house Vooz, has proven to be the exception to the broadcast rule in terms of its
merchandising success. Initially created for the internet as a series of short flash animations developed for an e-card
service, Pucca targeted young people who soon began to use Pucca’s e-card as a ‘love messenger’.
With strong red and black colours, Pucca and Garu is based on a love story surrounding an aggres-
sive girl, Pucca and an indifferent boy, Garu.
Bookyong and Calvin Kim brought the two characters into animation with a humorous,
romantic and hard hitting series.
As a result of its initial success, Vooz discovered that Pucca’s online fan base fuelled the
offline demand which, in turn, successfully transferred into a merchandising program.
Europe and China are currently the core markets for Pucca merchandising. Over and
above these, successful upcoming markets include Latin America (particularly Brazil and
Mexico), Singapore and Hong Kong.
The broadcasting rights were acquired by Jetix who turned the comic Pucca love stories into
a television series. Pucca world travel comic series (Vol.15) is available for licensing as well
as the Pucca on-line bike racing game, mobile content licensing, franchise opportunity, animation,
video-on-demand and the Pucca soap opera series (Asian region only). Vooz are also involved in
a Pucca theme park project in mainland China.
