TOTAL LICENSING
GAFFNEY IN LIQUIDATION
In a move that came as a shock to many in the business, after 30
years in the licensing business in Australia, Gaffney International
Licensing entered into voluntary administration on 6th August.
According to various sources, the move has come because of
a combination of pressures of managing cashflow together with
ongoing legal action for unpaid royalties and marketing funds, in-
stigated by one of Gaffney’s former licensors.
Of course, a prime reason was the loss of a number of represen-
tations in the last couple of years – notably Sesame Workshop,
Star Wars, HIT Entertainment and The Wiggles.
Although there has been rumour that one of the reasons behind
the action was Gaffney’s law suit against the Wiggles for unpaid
commissions following Gaffney’s termination in January, the action was only taken shortly prior to going
into administration and has little bearing on the decision to call in the administrators.
Under Australian law, the Receiver has a limited time to recommend to the creditors which way to go
– either continue business, sell as a going concern or wind-up the company. Whilst these options exist,
it is expected that the company will be wound up shortly.
Fred Gaffney is a consumate workaholic and networker who has been a legend in the licensing business
for thirty years, earning the friendship and respect of people on all sides of the industry around the
world. His company was established in 1977 and played a major role in the growth of the Australian
licensing industry. In recent years, the company was responsible for in excess of $500 million dollars of
licensed product retail sales. In addition to its Australian operations, Gaffney International Licensing had
a representative office in New Zealand and a network of strategic alliances with licensing agents in the
Americas, Europe and Asia. The company employed around thirty people.
